Building Lasting Friendships: The Power of Kindness and Empathy

Friendship is probably one of the most important relationships one can develop with a fellow human - a good friend is a bond that adds so much sweetness and fun to your life. Whether in school, in your neighbourhood, or online, there's more to learn than just understanding the value of kindness, compassion, and empathy in forging lasting friendships. These qualities will make you a very good friend and also develop an environment where people can thrive. Real-life examples can be seen in animated movies and cartoons, such as the movie Toy Story, where Woody and Buzz turn from enemies into best friends, all because of knowing how to sympathise with each other and be friendly at the right time.

It entails respect, generosity, and care while treating others. All that is required from a person for kindness to be shown to them by others are simple and frequent actions. Usually, people can offer a compliment to their friends, assist a friend with homework, or share their lunch with someone who forgot it. Kindness goes a long way in strengthening friendships. Characters in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic continuously portray kindness through their "Elements of Harmony," making every single episode convey the value of helping others. These seemingly small gestures, such as Fluttershy's nurturing animals or Pinkie Pie cheering up her friends, explain how meaningful these actions can be in real life too.

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It means putting oneself in another person's shoes and imagining how that person might feel in given situations. When you are empathetic, you don't think only of what is happening to you but also consider what is happening to others. It makes you respond in a manner that shows you understand them and empathise with them. In Inside Out, empathy plays a crucial role in understanding how people feel. Joy realises that validation of Sadness is as important in helping Riley through raw feelings. Sometimes the best thing to help out a friend is to feel what they are going through rather than immediately try to solve the problem.

Friendship takes trust. People build this sense of trust when they feel safe, respected, and understood. Kindness and empathy foster that trust. Kindness toward your friends opens the door for them to value you. Empathy lets them understand you and your acceptance, which can sometimes be challenging during both good and tough times. Good friends stick together—not only in times that are fun but when challenges arise as well. In Frozen, the bond of Anna and Elsa is strengthened through empathy. Anna supports and understands Elsa, which helps Elsa confront her fears, and their friendship grows stronger. Acts of kindness, like Olaf offering himself to keep Anna warm, emphasise trust and care in maintaining close relationships.

Kindness and empathy are not artistic talents; they are the ability to listen to and pay attention to others' needs and feelings. You can practise kindness and empathy by caring enough to listen to your friends when they are speaking to you, and only after they have finished speaking. Not interrupting shows that you care about what is going on in your friend's mind. Being there during difficult times, like when a friend isn't having a good day, expresses kindness and willingness to help others. In The Lion King, for example, we see this in Simba and his friends Timon and Pumbaa, who stick together through thick and thin, demonstrating how empathy and understanding help maintain good relationships even during trying times. Shared thinking and taking turns in group settings ensure that everyone feels included and respected. Maintaining friendships through shared successes—by showing joy in your friend's accomplishments, such as a good grade or winning a competition—enhances the friendship. Lastly, apologies are very important whenever needed because no one is perfect. A good friend would agree to make amends if they have hurt someone's feelings, and saying "I'm sorry" can make a significant difference in healing the friendship, just as Ralph learns to make up for his mistakes in Wreck-It Ralph.

Being a good friend means practising kindness and empathy every day. These qualities help you stay close to people and establish long-lasting friendships. Listening to an upset friend or taking pride in your friends' triumphs forms the foundation of a kind and empathetic atmosphere that allows friendships to grow and develop. By embodying and displaying these virtues in your relationships, you can become the kind of friend everyone values and trusts. So the next time you see a friend, remember this: a little kindness and empathy can go a very long way—just as we have seen through movies and cartoons, such as Finding Nemo, where Marlin learns how to trust and support Dory with the help of empathy.
